Volunteer Spotlight: Carly

Since June of 2020, Carly has been volunteering with Shelter Movers Waterloo Region and was a part of the initial applicant group that helped establish the chapter.

Carly currently works for a non-profit charity, which is how she developed her passion for supporting different causes. When she heard about Shelter Movers, she immediately knew it was the right organization for her.

“I was looking for a role that would get me moving and out of the house during the pandemic... I had never heard of Shelter Movers before but once I took a look at their website, I knew this was incredibly worthwhile work I'd love to contribute to. I also didn't have any experience or much detailed knowledge about violence against women so I was eager to learn more.”

After Shelter Movers Waterloo Region launched in December 2020, Carly took on the role of the Intake Coordination Supervisor. “Having some connections and knowledge of other organizations that could benefit from Shelter Movers’ work came in handy.” Carly says. In this position, she is responsible for supporting other Intake Coordinators and communicating with the referral agencies wanting to use Shelter Movers’ services in order to transition their clients to the Move Coordination stage. Carly has currently stepped down from her position but will be continuing to volunteer with Shelter Movers and she is looking forward to going on her first move!

When asked about what keeps her motivated as a volunteer, Carly cites the passion of everyone in Shelter Movers and the teamwork between volunteers. “You’re never on your own, there’s also people there to support you and answer all your questions.”

When she’s not working or volunteering, Carly enjoys watching and playing sports, and spending time with her family and friends.

Her advice for volunteers? “Ask all the questions until you’re in a spot where people can ask you the questions. Don’t lose sight of why you’re doing this work. Volunteering is such an important aspect of a great community – and it’s a privilege to do it!”
